Course Structure

There is not a great difference between the structure of CMU and most Portuguese PhD programs, so programming of stays and splitting of milestones between both sides is straightforward.

Application

Conditions: as described in Eligibility, Application and Selection criteria.

  • Student applies to the CMU-Port program at FCUL

          OR

  • Student applies to CMU in general and migrates to CMU-Port program.

At the end of the application period CMU and the FCUL exchange application files received locally and selection starts.

Application Evaluation

Students are selected in cooperation between CMU and FCUL.
Selected students are assigned co-advisors and a thesis theme.

Curricular Phase

Student gets a number of credits from PhD-level courses, with a given distribution between core areas and electives. Equivalences are possible, and are analyzed and granted depending on the candidate's curriculum. Initiation to research work is expected during this phase. Credits may be obtained from CMU courses and/or from CMU-accredited courses taken at Portuguese universities (in English).

NB - Breadth and depth of CMU and FCUL requirements are similar.
Courses performed at CMU - Typically 8 12-unit courses to achieve a number of 96 Units from graduate-level courses, in several areas. In CS: 5 courses from core (star) areas (Algorithms and Complexity, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Systems, Programming Languages, Software Systems) and 3 courses elective. In ECE: 3 courses from core areas (Algorithms/Complexity/Programming Languages, Applied Physics, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Control, Circuits, Computer Hardware Engineering, Signal Processing and Communications, Software Systems and Computer Networking) and 5 courses elective.
Courses performed at one of the Portuguese Universities, ex. FCUL - Typically 10 6-credit courses to achieve a number of 60 ECTS credits from graduate-level courses, in several areas. 4 courses from core areas (Computer Systems Organization, Information Systems, Programming Science and Technology, Computing Methodologies) and 6 courses elective.

NB - 1 ECTS is considered to equal roughly 1.5-1.6 Units, depending on the actual student effort. In consequence, 96 Units at CMU is equivalent to 60 ECTS in Europe.

Teaching requirement 1

NB - Both co-advisors and representatives of Follow-up Structure will attend Q.E. (in presence or by Video Conference).

NB - FCUL example, Follow-up Structure formed by: Chair of the Doctoral Studies Committee, advisor and co-advisor of the dissertation; a PhD from the scientific area of the plan presented, preferably from another university or research institution, national or international; a member of the Department's faculty, from a different area.
