Course Plan

Main themes of the PhD program

The themes of the dual PhD program's theses will be defined according to the interests of the faculty involved. Collaborative CMU/FCUL specific research topics supporting the theses are centered on, but not limited to, security and dependability challenges:

  • New risks for future telecom and Internet caused by networked embedded gadgets and mobile devices with capacity of causing physical damage.

  • Insufficient resilience of critical information infrastructures (CII) such as core networks, against faults and intrusions.

  • Security and dependability of emerging telecom and Internet services such as car-oriented infotainment, assisted driving.

The fine programming of the PhD timeline, namely the periods spent at each side, is left to the departments involved on both sides, provided that the guidelines described in the previous sections are respected.

  • The model chosen for the dual PhD with CMU CS Department is:
Student starts at CMU performing all or part of the course credits and initiation to research, until he/she is ready for the qualifying exam (written and oral communication requirement). The first teaching internship is also performed. Then he/she moves to the FCUL possibly to complete some courses. The second teaching internship is performed and research continues in Portugal, until the final thesis proposal is presented at the doctoral seminar. Student later moves to CMU, where thesis is completed.

  • An alternative model is followed by dual PhDs with CMU ECE Department: Student starts at the FCUL performing all or part of the course credits and initiation to research, and moves to CMU possibly to complete some courses, at the time he/she is about ready for the qualifying exam (written and oral communication requirement). Research continues at CMU, with first teaching internship. Student later moves to Portugal, where thesis research and second teaching internship is performed. Final thesis proposal is presented at the doctoral seminar and thesis completed in Portugal.

NB - All requirements are accompanied by co-advisors and Follow-up Structure representatives of both sides. Video conference will be used whenever justified and/or applicable.
